Have you ever been in a situation that no matter what you do,
things just won’t go your way? It’s like the old belief that you got bad luck
from walking under a ladder or got 7 years of bad luck from breaking a mirror.
Come rain come sun, nothing seems to work out for you. It is like there is an
old hag somewhere who has dedicated her life to making your life as miserable
as it could possibly be.
That is what I think is happening to my beloved country.
Someone somewhere has entrapped our guardian angel, enslaved our fairies and
trapped our genie in a dark dungeon in hell. Looking at everything that is going
on, I am inclined to think that we are the main agenda, in every AGM, of the
witches and sorcerers association of the world (WSAW). I wonder why nothing
ever goes our away.
Traditionally, we have four seasons in a year, which are evenly
distributed. This is a good thing right? Especially considering the fact that
were located in the tropics. What more could man ask for? Unfortunately, this
is not so, instead of taking advantage of this God- given wonderful climate,
it’s the same climate that makes us suffer so much that you wonder if it’s a
blessing or a curse. The dry season for example, four months of sun and wind
(adequate) but instead of taking advantage of these wonderful conditions, we’re
constantly are crying about drought and famine. January of every year is
becoming that month of “Kenyans for Kenya” it’s a shame that desert countries
like Israel and Egypt donate food to Kenya. I mean, really! We are not even
ashamed of ourselves accepting these donations.
Come April and May, the skies open up and we’re “blessed”
with rain. This is that time we should rewrite our wrongs so that we don’t end
up suffering when the New Year comes. This blessing rapidly (0-100 in 3 seconds) turns into a curse
as floods ravage our beloved country. Property is destroyed, crops are washed
away, animals die, buildings collapse. Instead of enjoying the showers of
blessings, we end up crying over our losses. All this goes on amid water
rationing. You’re left to wonder, who cursed us??
They say diversity is the spice of life, A lot of diverse
communities we have in Kenya, but that does not necessarily mean that we will
prosper because of our different cultures. Instead, tribalism is a nagging
thorn in our flesh. We’re constantly fighting within ourselves, we cannot
tolerate the other tribe, it’s an abomination to marry from a rival tribe, we
cannot form business partnerships and we just hate each other. Mind you, were from
the same country. I shake when we decry racism and we cannot tolerate each
other of the same color just because they don’t speak as we do. Nanialituchawi?
We have one of the countries with the highest literacy rates
in the world. Ideally, this translates to rational thinking and leads to
economic development. But this isn’t so; we are still grappling with poverty
and disease, yearly famines and so on. Our
politicians are so greedy that they can steal even from church mice let alone
from themselves. Sighs!
You could be forgiven to think that Kenya is cursed. No one
would blame you if you thought that we as a country are possessed with the
spirit of self-destruction. Personally, I see my country as one of the most
blessed country in the world. I can’t begin to imagine what would happen if we
had winter, earthquakes (and our every collapsing buildings), volcanic eruptions,
tsunamis, hurricanes and other ravages mother nature has to offer. My premise
is that we have cursed ourselves (if sorcery really exists). We have turned our
blessings into a curse. We have taken a good thing and turned it into the most
awful thing ever conceived. Am still hopeful that all this will change, one day
that excess sun will be able to power our homes and industries, that rainfall
will be stored and used for irrigation during the day seasons so that we do not
have Kenyans dying of hunger. I am hopeful that we’ll lean to see ourselves as
one and not a tribe; I hope to see selfless politicians who put the needs of
their constituents before their selfish wants. I long to see a prosperous
Kenya.
