ABOUT ME...

Let me take the courtesy of introducing myself in my 1st ever blog. According to the State's Department of Immigration, my name is Mganda Tolbert Maina. For those who have had the pleasure - or displeasure- of meeting me can tell you that I look nothing like my last name. (But that's a story for another day) As for my family and friends, I go by a whole lot of nicknames from Tollie, TallB, Tbart, Bart, Tolberto, Tall-but Short, Tall - But Handsome (not really)... and so on your imagination is your own limit.

About me... this is perhaps the most ambiguous and at the same time most intimidating statement I have come across. Sometimes when am asked "tell us more about yourself" I tend to get excited. In mind mind I always tell myself "go on tiger, this is your time to shine" I get excited because I feel like I wanna tell the whole world about the awesome me. But here is the catch, you have to sell yourself without overselling yourself. What bugs me is that you can not "go all out," like a GNLD sales person trying to sell to you a mythical Chinese product or an "Insurance executive" trying to pitch an insurance cover to you and you know very well that you're covered by the blood.

As Eko Dyda would say, "Cheza Chini" meaning be humble-nyenyekea mungu akutumie- you have to be careful not to divulge too much. You have to play the role of the mini - skirt (am sure ya'll have heard/ read this phrase one too many times). You have to be apt with regards to the situation. You Have to balance what come out of your brain, whether sense or non sense.

But herin lies the problem, take this case... You meet this beautiful lady, ask her out (to your utmost surprise, she accepts). So you're in this nice restaurant (The Ocean baskets or The Zen Gardens of this city), you've had your meal, which you have no idea how to pronounce, and then she tells you... "so Tolbert, tell me more about yourself." Now, you are this extroverted person who has had a lifetime experience in just 25 short years (all of those in lived in Hollywood movies) do you go all out or do you chezea chini? (Remembering whats at stake) Am sure you don't want to look like the mouthy guy who "Just talked all bout himself the whole night"  neither do you want to be "that guy who bore me to death" remember you gotta make an impression. What do you do?

Trust me (please don't) as many people would say, "Just be you" because at the end of the day, the other party will always have their opinion. So if you feel you want to go all out, brother/ sister, spill it all, let it out or hold it back, tuck it in. If its destined to happen it will happen.

In my opinion, I would rather you tell me about me and I tell you about you coz from where you sit, there is a whole different perspective from where I stand. At the end of the day, a wise man changes his opinion in light of new facts.

  4. Disclaimer: I'm a man of many words, so my comment will be a bit long. So here goes......

First of this is a good read, especially from a first time blogger. There are a few mistakes here and there but generally it's a good start. My piece of advice would be, "Keep It Real". There's a tendency/trend out there, for bloggers who duplicate other people's work/experiences just to get traffic, but at the end of the day lack credibility in their work and also lose the trust of the readers. Own your stories/experiences as much as possible. Tell it like you see it. No sugar coating stuff just to excite the reader.

Don't try to neutralize ideas/stories/experiences that appear/feel controversial. Kick the tires, honk the horns. Question everything, and be willing to be vulnerable sometimes, to be judged and misjudged for your opinions/views. Share/tell your stories/ideas/opinions, even if you fear others won't like it.

Make your own mistakes and learn from them. Every misstep will bring you closer to your perfect step.
